For snorkelling and scuba diving fanatics this really has to be the place to visit. With the flight time of only 5 ½ hours it’s a great alternative to the Caribbean for half the price and in half the time. Its popularity is growing steadily year-by-year as the upmarket hotels and their amazing facilities entice holidaymakers from around the globe.

If a swimming pool at your hotel is high on your list of must haves then look no further, most of the hotels have numerous pools of different dimensions, size and with different themes such as waterfalls and lazy rivers, it’s like one big competition to see which has the best pool area. ot that you’ll want to stay by the pool all day. Most of the hotels have their own long stretch of stunning, golden sandy private beach, you really will be spoilt for choice. For the more energetic why not try one of the readily available dive schools. Be warned though, this is an islamic country so alcohol is not readily available in local bars, only in hotels and restaurants and in Ramadan there is a ban on alcohol, cigarettes and certain foods so be sure to check your travel dates.

If swimming, snorkelling and sunbathing are not on your agenda why not visit the market and barter in one of the souks for leatherwear, jewellery or perfume. This is a great place for all the family as many of the hotels run their own kids clubs, which gives parents a well deserved break for a couple of hours each day, but for a tip for the fair skinned avoid July and August as temperatures can hit the 100s making it quite unbearable.

Eating Out

Beleive it or not you can get McDonalds here but it would be a shame to opt for the fast food option when there are many other choices in traditional Egyptian restaurants, the standards are extremely high and very reasonably priced too. If you want to try lots of little bits and bats then try the Meze, if a full meal is on the cards then choose from beautifully tender steaks, succulent veal, chicken cooked eastern med style or one of the many tasty fish dishes.
